The founders of Saphium Biotechnology were all born in the late 80s and early 90s. The dangers of acid rain had just been eliminated, in kindergarten and school we were taught to separate waste and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) as propellant were just banned to stop the growth of the ozone hole.
The decline of fossil fuels, pollution of the seas by oil and waste, and global warming accompanied us growing up. The last generation has already solved great problems as a collective and we will solve problems of our time and as well as the next generation will solve future problems.
We got to know each other in Graz as part of our NAWI studies. In 2015, we applied to RebelBio with the idea of producing compostable products from CO2 andH2. The Irish Life Science Accelerator welcomed our team of six at the time and we spent three months in Cork, Ireland, learning a lot about business, science and start-ups.
After our return to Austria, we applied to the Science Park Graz and were accepted there. During this time, we have realized that we need a lot of capital to implement our bioplastic vision. We decided against leverage through an investor and for organic growth with a product that will also have a positive effect on the environment. With this, we started the development of Legumino+ in 2016 and started with first sales in 2017.
In 2019, we will be working on expanding our distribution network and on new microbiological products and the cost-effective production of PHAs.
